Giant Crystal Cave: The Underground World of Giant Crystals
Beneath the desert of northern Mexico lies a cave unlike anywhere else on Earth.
Instead of stalactites and stalagmites...
It contains giant crystals larger than telephone poles.
A Hidden Wonder
The **Cave of the Crystals** was discovered in **2000** by miners working inside the **Naica Mine** in Chihuahua, Mexico.
When they broke through a rock wall, they entered a chamber filled with enormous transparent crystals stretching in every direction.
Some crystals measured over **11 meters (37 feet)** long.
Others weighed an estimated **55 tons**.
How Did They Form?
The crystals are made of **selenite**, a transparent variety of the mineral gypsum.
For hundreds of thousands of years, extremely hot groundwater—around **58°C (136°F)**—remained saturated with dissolved minerals.
Because the temperature stayed remarkably stable, the crystals grew incredibly slowly.
This allowed them to reach sizes almost never seen anywhere else on Earth.
Too Dangerous to Explore
Although the cave is stunning, it is also extremely dangerous.
Temperatures inside approach **58°C (136°F)** with humidity levels close to **100%**.
Without specialized cooling suits and breathing equipment, a person can survive only about **10 to 20 minutes** inside.
Because the mine eventually refilled with groundwater after pumping stopped, the cave is once again submerged beneath water.
A Geological Time Capsule
Scientists continue studying the crystals to better understand how minerals grow over extremely long periods.
The cave also provides valuable information about ancient underground environments and Earth's geological history.
